Hello fellow pet owners!

I have a 6-month-old puppy who is full of energy and loves to go on walks with me. However, I'm not sure how far I should be taking her on our walks. I don't want to tire her out too much or cause any harm to her growing body.

So, I wanted to reach out to the community and ask, how far can a 6-month-old puppy walk? Are there any factors I should consider, such as breed or size? And how can I tell if my puppy is getting tired or needs a break during our walks?

I want to make sure I'm providing my puppy with enough exercise and stimulation, but also not pushing her too hard. Any advice or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you in advance for your help!

A couple of 15 or 20 minuet walks a day, won't cause any harm. But if your wondering about growth plate development ... that takes 18 months. So no crazy distances or endurance work as it were for 18 months.

And Boxer's are not "all weather dog's." So they don't do well in heat or cold. But slightly below freezing in the snow or cold for less that 30 minuets ... should not be an issue, with out a coat and boots. And in the heat ... (which is hard to imagine now?)

Boxer's are, a brachycephalic, Breed and typically those breed's, don't do well in the "Heat!" I know of two "High Exceptions," one of which was a "Hog Catch Boxer," in Louisiana! And the other of which was my Struddell a High Desert, High Heat ... Open Desert Bunny Chaser. :)

Not exactly a high sample rate? But Struddell was at least 4 when she did stuff and if a Jack Rabbit could hit 35 she could do 33 mph! Fully grown no issues. But that was her ... and not advised!

I would just monitor the puppy and see when she gets tired but a mile or 2 at a walk shouldn’t hurt her. Things to watch out for are extreme cold but the heat has always been a major factor for my dogs. I live on the east coast it gets very hot here so I limit my dogs activities to very early mornings like we are out at daybreak. One thing people around here don’t take into consideration is the hot pavement and sidewalk, if it’s too hot for you to walk around barefoot it’s too hot for the dogs feet as well. At 6 months the puppy needs physical exercise as well as mental stimulation talk to your dog do some training everyday while she is young just not to excess.

Chip, you miss those days of Struddell kicking in her prey drive and putting it into High gear. It's a wonderment to watch.
Yeah ... those were the day's! And Stu, did not mind that I handy capped her? The chase was not on ... until I determined, which way the Bunny was going? Hwy or Mountains, if towards the Mountains it was OK, if towards the HWY, it was "NO!" So at that point ... the Bunnies always had a head start!

And she was fast! She could make up the gap quickly? But then .... "every-time," the Bunny would break hard right into the Brush and Stru, would track it like a guided missile! And then ... "every time," she would switch from sight to scent? And I would watch, the Bunny speed off down the straight, Dog Free! LOL, she never figured that one out?? I always wondered if a Greyhound or an Afgan, would fall for that?

But those day's are gone. These day's I fear Bunnies, and I keep Bella (Boxer/Pit) out of the scrub Brush! She is not "Boxer Fast," but faster than my "Band Dawg," and uh faster than me ...

Her recall is "mostly," line of sight? I don't let her go into the brush but line of sigh ... 50 to 60 yards away no big deal. Not great but "good enough!" :)
