Maple has UTI and has been on an antibiotic for 10 days now and has 4 more days to go of this treatment, the thing that concerns me is she still has discharge it's lighter in color (not as dark yellow/green) but it's still there nevertheless, I was wondering if those of you who have had your pups on the antibiotic for UTI how long did it take to clear up?

It will usually clear within the 14 day period.  Depending on how bad it was and how stronge the med's were they gave you.  I have also seen it take up to 4 weeks...also come and go within a time frame.....so.... I think the best thing to do it finish the med's and then see where you stand....some discharge is normal but it should be more of a clear to white color then yellow or green.......

thanks Sharon, it's lighter now some days it's milky white and some days it's light yellow, the vet's office accidentally gave us 14 pills but we are only suppose to gvie her half a pill for 14 days, so we have extra ones, but i'd rather she not have to take anymore antibiotics...

Phoenix had a UTI when she was around 6 or 8 months and we had to go for two rounds of antibiotics for a total of 14 days. We started off with 7 days but it didn't clear it up.

Just curious what your vet gave you for the UTI?

Phoenix was on Clavamox (amoxicillin-clavulanate).

Just out of curiousity how much does Maple weigh?

Maybe Sharon can clear this up for me but cephalosporin (class of drugs that cefpodoxime belongs to) antibiotics are normally twice daily are they not? Or for certain treatment are they once daily?

Cefpodoxime better know as a drug called Simplicef is a once a day antibiotic.....It is actually one of the stronger one's and I think more effective then Amoxi or Clavamox....But, my preference for a UTI is SMZ/TMP ( Sulfamethoxazole-Trimethoprim ), which is also given once a day.........:)

well she had the infection for several weeks the vet wanted to see if it'll clear up on it's own and when it didn't they prescribed her the antibiotic, could that be why she was put on a stronger one? she weighs somewhere between 25 and 26lbs.

My guess would be yes....or that is just your vets preference for use with a UTI....With her weight it would have been 1/2 tablet once a day with that medicine.

she is on half a tablet :) I guess we'll wait out the rest of the 4 days and hope it clears up, I just thought that this far into the treatment there should be some obvious improvements.... oh well.  do you know if it causes them pain when urinating?

well I think it's gotten a bit better it's just not gone, the discharge is still there but is lighter in color and tehre is less of it, she doesn't appear to be in pain but she doesn't seem to be able to hold it, she goes to the door to be let out and if i'm not right behind her she'll go right then and there, gggrrr thanks for the replies :)

Yep they are aggrivating....but check with Sadiesmomma she got some good info on using cranberry to help clear it faster and to keep it away along with some major research on foods to help keep it from coming back....She is cool...and has become an expert on UTI's (unfortunantly)

Okay I found my info on the Cranberry Pills for her weight she could take 400 mg a day along with her current med's....Just be sure they are regular capsules or tablets. The gel caps with liquid inside do NOT digest in a dog's system. They pass them whole. That applies to all products in the gel caps. Plain old-fashioned capsules work great & you can sprinkle the contents into food unless it tastes really nasty.
