Hi. Alyssa here, with Claudia (8 mo old rescue) since yesterday. I've chosen the food. We're working on potty training, so I get her ready to go out before feeding, then we go. My question is what amount of food would be best for her. She is still growing a bit. She was a stray for a while and looks a bit thin to me. Somewhere I read up to 3 cups of dry food per day, which could be 1 cup three times per day...I am tending to split it up a bit, like 1 cup when I know she's hungry and splitting the other 2 cups into a few servings. I don't know how much she weighs (I'll find out when I take her to vet). I am open to advice and guidance on this, please. Thank you!

The guide on the dog food bag is a good place to start, but other factors will matter too like her body condition level of activity as well. My dogs are matured out so I feed them the same amount 2x a day morning and evening at least 3 hrs before any activity to avoid bloat and it’s quiet time after eating, no running before evening feed either. Some people feed 3 times a day it’s whatever fits your lifestyle and activity level. Please avoid grain free food I’m not sure what food you have chosen, your Vet will be a good help to you here regarding her weight.

Thank you! That is valuable advice. I will make an appt with my vet tomorrow to find out her weight and ask his advice. I am not using grain free. I've heard others say to avoid grain free, specifically with Boxers (though I've never fallen for the grain free "craze" with any of my dogs). I hadn't thought of looking at the side of the dog food bag! So obvious! Based on what I read on the bag, I'm not feeding her enough. I'm going to increase it to 5 cups of quality dry food per day. I'll feed her a bit more food, more often, rather than giving her a whole bunch of food all at once, and we'll take it easy after she eats. She was a stray for a while and seems slim, and she's still growing. We do a brisk walk between 1 1/2 and 2 hours a day. Thanks again. I'm open to the opinions of others, so to everyone, feel free to respond with any ideas/advice you may have.

Also, I'm giving her Bully Sticks and pig's ears to chew on. I haven't given her a DNA test yet, but I am more convinced every day that she is part Beagle. In my eyes, she is a Boxer above all. I hope we're welcome here, even though she is not a pure-bred Boxer. :)

Of course you are welcome here! We are all dog lovers here! Watch those pig ears, I used to give them to a previous Boxer I had and she almost choked on one really badly ended up digging it out of her throat! They can chew them till they are soft and then try to swallow them when they are still too big, plus there had been a salmonella recall on them so I just avoid them, never have used bully sticks. I give my dogs benebones and Nyla bones for chewing and throw them out when the knobs are chewed off or they get sharp.

Mine ate about 3 1/2-4 cups per day, split between 2 meals, he gave up 3 meals probably around 4 months or so. I do give bully sticks to my dogs now (I now have standard poodles), well basically 1 of them who likes to chew. I push it thru a treat ball so that it is secure, as I don't want it getting small and him swallowing an end.

Thank you, Chip. Point taken about pig ears. The other thing that turns me off about pig ears is that I've bought them in packages only to find that some of the ears were tattooed! I tossed those in the garbage..who wants to feed their dog tattoo ink? So, I'll skip those from now on.

Ok, today it will have worked out to 4 1/2 cups. We'll see how it goes and what the vet has to say.

Salmonella, is a thing and yeah that can happen with Pig Ear's, I suppose? I have never heard of that happening but I don't know everything? But Salmonella with people yep ... that happens! Usually from Raw Eggs, and next would be vegetables and fruits?

And with veggies, it seems to show up in Spinach and lettuce, both of which I kinda think suck anyway! But I have never had a real problem with either (in that regard so yeah) ...

So for "me," the only "Clear and Present Danger," I see with "Pig Ears," is the size! And yep as you noted a Dog, will chew them to they are soft and then "try," and swollen them whole???

I also once had to pick up 75 lbs of Band Dawg, and reach down his throat and pull out a "Whole Pick Ear," that he had tried to swallow whole?? Had I not been home and have him in view ... yeah he would have died!

But I did not blame the Pick Ear? Stupid Dog's don't really chew, they rip and tear and then swollen. So with Pig Ear's ... I use garden shear's and slice the "Pig Ear," into reasonable sized pieces!

And even then now ... if I give Bella a Pig Ear (Reasonably Sliced) I keep her in site! The Bully Sticks are not an issue but those thing's are pricey!

And I do give/gave my dog's "Cow Knuckles," those are huge and safe (for your dog) and one of them will become two in short order. And the only hazard they can present to is to (the owner) if you step one of the halves in the dark, so yeah.

And for newbies, "Stay Away," from the "Deer Antlers!" Those thing's are now well know to break dog's teeth!

Oh definitely (Part Boxer) but the "Beagle Thing?" I am not seeing it? Based on what I see, at weight in I'd put her at 40 Lbs max, and most likely less?

Based on where she came from, meaning not a "Boxer Rescue," being 50% right is pretty good?" You don't show her in "Profile," sideways, but I would expect to see a deep chest and tight waist (tucked waist) and she has "Tulip Ear's." None of those are "Beagle, Trait's?"

This is my current girl "Bella, Boxer/Pit, Mix," she's a rescue and I know her background.

Save for color ... your dog look's very familiar to me. But hey I'm not "Embark." :)

Bella is beautiful!!! Yes, Claudia and Bella are built a lot alike, including facial structure, and I'd bet Claudia's at least 50 percent Boxer. I'm guessing a bit Beagle because she has "webbed" paws, which I think Beagles have, and Boxers do not, according to what I've read. Claudia's markings remind me a lot of the Beagles I've met, but markings aren't an exact science. I am going to check prices on doggie DNA kits right now. I am very curious. My brother tested his dog's DNA recently, and there were all kinds of surprises.

To Chip: I took a closer look at her paperwork. I'm guessing she is around 35lbs now (she was 31.6 lbs on March 7th), which is less than I imagined (I'm not good at weight guessing), so I'll adjust food accordingly. She seems big to me, cause my last pup was super small.

LOL, well you can forget "Super Small?" That is not gonna happen. At 35 lbs and closing in on a year old? Well that is what I would expect with a Boxer/Pit. And she is going to get a few inches, taller and a few inches wider? And most likely somewhere close to 55 lbs?

As long as she gets, enough exercise and is not over fed? At the three to 4 year mark ... she should be somewhere between 55 and 65 lbs? My Struddell (white Boxer) at her last weigh in was 65 lbs?? I was stunned cuz if you saw her and had to guess ... you'd have said 55 lbs. But she still had the same tiny waist and deep chest as she always did. But compared to a male Boxer ... she looked tiny??

My first Working Line German Shepard Dog, was a 113 lbs! Oversized WL GSD and he was a big Dog! He did not like people and sigh ... I got tired of saying, "no you can't pet him and no he is not a Wolf!" I don't recommend a GSD to anyone I know ... but another topic.

Now if your girl is a Boxer/Begal and not a Boxer/Pit? Then Dog Park's ... which no one that understands ... dog's would recommend! Then, I would thing ... going in and out of a Dog Park ... would not be a big deal?

But if she is part "Pit," and not part "Beagle?" Going in out of the "Dog Park?"That Will be where you see an "Issue!" "Leash Barrier Aggression!" And you will be the A-Hole!

I "proved that one with "Bella," cuz well I do stuff? It did not go well! If she is Boxer Begal? Which I don't see and if you go to a Dog Park (which is not recommend!) If you want to see, what is what? Try and go thur the "AIr Lock," when another dog is coming out! And yeah ... I just said that ... but don't do that! I've already done it. And no one or Dog's got hurt but it was pretty humiliatingly! My bad ... "I learned what I suspected and I traumatized, the other dog owners! They were afrid to go near there dog!

They had never seen there dog act like that! And they would not go near her? Me well sigh, same old same old, so I dealt with it, got her out of there ... "My Bad, ... you should not use JQP, as Ginnie Pig's, to test stuff out! not my best moment but no one got hurt. :)

But if Bella is in the Dog Park, she gets along fine with other dog's! But hey if your dog is a Boxer/Begal ... you won't see that happen. But the best advise is to "Stay out of The Dog Park. :)
