Hello Everyone. I joined the forum to try and do research and hopefully help my 10yr old boy. However, I'm still not sure what to do and I'm very torn about deciding if it's just his time. Any thoughts are welcome.
A month ago Murphy swallowed part of a Nyla bone (I know they are terrible, I wanted something soft. It was for our puppy mini Goldendoodle to occupy him while I clipped his nails. Murphy some how got it in a 1 minute span I turned away.)
He threw it up right away. But proceeded to continue to throw up for a good two hours straight. I took him to the vet, they did blood work and xrays and determined there was no blockage but that things were obviously inflamed and swollen. We went home with antibiotics, pro-biotics. He seemed okay. I was feeding him very little kibble, mostly rice and squishy foods for a few days. While I was out My SO that never feeds the dogs went and gave him a full bowl of dry kibble. Which he quickly threw back up, very mucus and blood filled. After this, he pretty much held zero food down in any amounts. I've given him 1/8th cup of bone broth, tiny bits of rice, wet pate' style dog food, sweet potatoes, goats milk, etc. We've been to the vet a half dozen times for more blood work, tests, ultrasounds, etc. Everything has come back normal (just that his intestines and stomach are swollen.) We've been given multiple types of anti-nausea medication, meds to prevent him from throwing up, etc. Nothing has worked. After the ultrasound the dr said she thinks he may have Inflamed Bowel Disease and suggested a hydrolyzed protein diet, steroids OR doing a Biopsy. However, he cant even keep down mashed sweet potatoes, or 1/8th cup of broth.. So I haven't even attempted kibble. I opted to go with steroids because the idea of an invasive biopsy that he needs to be put under for just seemed scary to me.. And in this ALL started from a nyla bone.. He has never had any issues before this. not one.
He has been on the steroids for over a week now, and he is still throwing up nearly every time he eats no matter how little I give him. I got a second opinion last night from an Emergency Pet hospital. After doing blood work, xrays, etc. They also suggested going to an internal medicine specialist to do a biopsy... But she thinks it may be more with his esophagus versus his intestines/stomach.
I'm lost as to what to do. I guess I'm looking for some insight if anyone has had any similar experiences. If any of you have gone the route of an intestinal biopsy, how terrible was it for the pup? He is so frail. He has gone from nearly 60lbs to maybe 40 in the past month. He still seems to have some energy, WANTS to eat. If they do a biopsy and its cancer, It seems selfish of me to try and keep him with chemo (not to mention the expense and frankly in his state he may not even make it through..) I guess I just don't know what ELSE it could be if its not cancer.. if it was IBD the steroids should be working at this point, right?
I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around all this. He went from being so healthy, running around, playing with our puppy, woo-wooing, playing fetch to this frail skinny boy and no real answers from drs.. in a month..
