Just wanted to let you all know im about to take Mav to the vet after a huge snow lol..the receptionisht couldnt believe i was willing to come out in this but we only live a block away..the reason for going is not as funny...the pimple on his face is still concerning me and he has started to lose a bit of hair so we are off to test for mange...hope it isnt but if it is im glad i caught this just a few days after it presented. Im wondering if maybe he was stressed due to our separation and some other changes that may have caused it to present (if it is)...please keep us in your prayers..im nervous as hell and so is my visa but the peace of mind is well worth it!
HAHA and im thinking about getting a second?! i need to be the bank of canada if she is anything like Mav!
p.s. Sharon thank you for all your help...we skipped the cortisone and just decided to take the skin scrape to be sure.
Wow you did catch that early Donya. Mav will do great from what I have been reading in the threads he is a pretty strong boy. I will keep you both in my thoughts and prayers this morning.
Good luck Maverick! Hope it's nothing serious and that you're all better soon! I hear you on the visa....I had to lock mine away to try to pay it down!
wow...$100 a month in vet bills?!?!?!? Thank God that other than Jetta's UTI and first battle with worms at 6 weeks my pups have been healthy...total since we got Jetta in september we have only spent like $300 in vet bills...and that's for both dogs for vaccines, heartworm, deworming, check ups, urinalysis, UTI treatment, etc...jeez....my mom only spends about $200 a year or less on her 3 in vet bills...wow...I couldn't imagine!
Well a physical exam costs about $50, so if theres anything actually wrong tack on another $50 for tests and then some more for any medication prescribed. Can't really walk out of the vet for under 50 to 70 bucks around here.
our vet waives the exam cost for vaccines...so we never had to pay an examination fee for the puppy shots...we did have to pay for an examination for Bo when he got his rabies because he was older and wasn't getting all his shots ( i did his other ones) but that was only $25 I think...then Jetta's UTI examination fee was only $10 because they have a second dog discount....the UTI test was $25...the meds $14...the rabies shot was $18 and Jetta's vaccines all together were like $150 wormings were $25...so that;s...less than $300...I'd say that's pretty good for keeping two dogs healthy for almost 6 months...lol
Well im back...and yes sully that is EXACTLY how our vet is...55 for the exam and then tests and medicine...
GOOD NEWS!!! the vet scraped and said there were no mites. THANK GOD! that said we were not pleased with our vet visit and I WISH sharon was here to be Mav's vet. The news was that he had a bacterial infection due to some clogged hair folicles if i understood correctly. he scraped and said no mites were found and proceeded to give maverick a slow release antibiotic in a shot form...He never discussed the cost with us and when we went to pay it was an 80 something dollar shot....the vet tech was shocked we had not been offered the pill antibiotics first that were cheaper (we are students) or at least been made aware of our options.
ALSO our vet hates holistic foods and keeps trying to get us on hills which i wont do..and we have made a family decision to wait until maverick is about a year and a year and a half before we neuter..our vet refused to hear any of this and told me to bring him in to get him neutered when he is 6mo....uhhhh hell Mav is 7 and a half months old...just made me think that he didnt read the chart which is another reason i dont want to have that vet neuter maverick...he doesnt listen to me or respect what im saying..i fear him not reading that chart and using ACE or something. Me and Travis are just glad that he doesnt have mange but we are a bit angry that he didnt discuss options with us...They told us the reason they dont like giving a pill form of antibiotics is because people can be irresponsible and not finish them off or find it hard to give them...if i was irrisponsible would I have rushed him in to the vet at 9am and paid 150$ for a pimple?
so good news and bad news...something else that was very cool was that there were many puppies there today and Mav played very well with them which made me feel really good since he has had limited exposure to other dogs..it's made me feel that i will be able to add another dog in the future.
Well that was my morning..how are you all doing?
Donya - that is great news! My girl Skylar had the same thing when she was a pup. She had several pimples on her chin area. The vet said it was bacterial as well... I can't remember what they gave us to put on there but she only had it that one time and it never came back. I wonder if it is a puppy thing???
I noticed that everyone is talking about vet costs on here...just wanted to share something if you weren't already all aware.
Before your vet gives you medication for your pet...inquire as to what it is...the majority (minus worm medications) of drugs are also available from your local pharmacy...and in generic form thus being alot cheaper...I saved a gentleman $100.00 a month on medication his dog had to be on daily just by him getting the vet to call in a prescription for the dog to the pharmacy. I saved myself $20.00 on one prescription of antibiotics for a UTI for my baby. Your vet might not like doing it because they have a huge markup on medications which means they don't get that business from you but they can't stop you from requesting they call in a prescription for you animal.
Only issue with Pharmac is dosages are different for humans then for dogs and you need to be very careful with regards to selecting them and administering them.
Glade to hear the good news for Maverick...As for your vet I can understand your frustrations, I'm also thinking about changing vets for the same reasons, it just seems that they don't pay attention to the details anymore and are just getting to busy and more concerned about getting in and out as quick as possible, it's almost like an assembly line and no longer as personable like I want it to be.
hugs and kisses from Gaby to Maverick
Glad you got good news on Mav and that the skin was clear...So it ended up being a hair folly issue that was one of the options Sorry you are having a hard time with your vet and from what I ready you need to find another. I would love to know what the shot was though if you have the name handy...That part is kind of strange because generally a single injection is cheaper then a script of med's....who knows....but glad he is okay and you did get some good news there and alot of mind relief!!!!!
Our vet charges a $30 examination fee, which is waived depending on what has to be done. Sadie is notorious for pimples as I call them. She gets them alot easier and I attribute that to her being a white boxer. Wash Maverick's dish after each meal. Wipe his face with a wet cloth. I also use oxy pads on her face before bed.
