As some of  you know my mom resucued a boxer from the humane society last week.  Well, she has heart worms and still has 2 treatments left to get.  Anyway yesterday she wouldn't eat and she's just laying around.  My mom says she looks bad.   The humane society said to call if she gets that way.  Question....they don't open today until 1 pm, it is 9 am now.  My mom is really worried.  Should she take her to the emergency vet or would it be ok to wait until 1?  OMG!  I hope she is gonna be alright.  My mom will freak if something happens to her.

I would say just take her to the emergency vet, if it was me thats what I would do.

E VET stat, he needs to get on medication, the heart worms are disintegrating into his blood stream and working their way out of her system, in doing this they need complete rest for the first 4-6 weeks.  If they are active they are in danger of having an embolysm.  A vet can sometimes help with this.  So quit reading this post and GO GO GO.  If we are wrong then at least you have peace of mind.

If they are doing injections for the heartowrm treatment then it is probably a combination of the medicine and the heartworms moving and dieing that is making it feel bad....Rich is right that they have to be kept calm during this treatment because the worms are breaking loose and moving within the body...It is very common that they feel bad and also that they wont eat well while undergoing HW Treatment.....IMO you probably could wait until 1 because it is only 4 hours and there would probably be no major changes in that period as long as the Humane Society is able to deal with the situation....Otherwise going to the EVet may ease your moms mind and speed along feeling better with some fluids....Let us know!

our humane society opens at 11am BUT the vets and the intake are open at 7 am...also for any animal adopted there thats having issues can be seen in the am too..worth a try? we had to do that with Onyx b/c his kennel cough turned into a secondary infection also...

Well, our Humane Society and e vet is across the street from each other so we stopped at the HS first.  They were closed but my mom knocked on the door and someone answered.  My mom told them about Laila and they have her right now.  Haven't heard anything yet but I'm praying everything is ok.  Thanks for all the opinions and happy thoughts.  Will update again later when I know more.

Well Laila is back with my mom.  The vet seems to think all her issues are due to the heartworms.  They are doing blood work and will know tomorrow morning if there is something else.  My mom seems to feel a little better but is still worried.  She hates seeing Laila so sad looking.  Thanks everyone for all the thoughts and prayers.  I'll update again when I know more.

I've never gone thru heartworm treatment like that, but I can imagine it's a bit hard on the dog...Glad Laila ia home tho and hoping that was all it was...Sending lots of healing vibes out to her

Laila is back at the humane society.  They said she is having a bad reaction to the heartworm treatment.  It may be because she was so malnutritioned.  She was only 33 lbs when she was brought there.  She weighs 49 lbs now but still VERY thin.  Anyway, they are keeping her.  Started her on some fluids and they will keep her until she's done her treatments.  As soon as she gets better my mom will bring her back home.  Can everyone keep Laila in their prayers?
