We rescued a 3 yr old boxer Sunday. The fosters said they noticed he will grumble low if a dog approached while he ate. He is great with treats but I noticed on day 2 that when our puggle got near him while he ate his dinner that he did grumble at her. Any suggestions on how to correct this appropriately or should we just alway separate him while eating? He is a really sweet dog I don't want this to turn into a problem.
I would always separate the two dogs during meals. You don't know the history, and why take a chance of a nasty fight. I'd also keep an eye on any children who might approach his food, or be carrying food. I may be over cautious, but it's not so difficult to take precautions. You'll learn more about his behavior as time goes on, and can change the policy later.
For me, keeping both the dogs away from each other while they are eating there food as you may never know, how and when will they start fighting for the foods. And to get yourself away from such nasty condition. It is always being the best choice that one can make to keep themselves away from the things that might get worsen then ever after.
