This site looks to have a lot of information!
Our boxer, Jag, is 6.5 years old. Such a wonderful dog! Having a rough few months as he's getting stiff and sore. Vet and us thought a sprain/strain from his crazy play on a sloped area this summer...but it's resurfacing about every 3-4 weeks. I plan on going to the vet this week again as he's back to stiff right hind leg and won't walk up stairs again. I'm quite concerned of a permanent condition and not a temporary injury.

Sounds like an ACL tear, I'd be requesting a referral to an orthopaedic specialist. These are pretty common in our breed and your guy is at the age when it tends to happen.

In the mean time, no stairs, no off leash even for potty breaks. Do not allow him to climb up on beds or furniture and put him on strict rest.

I agree that seeing an orthopedic specialist would be very important. They have the expertise to come to an accurate diagnosis that many regular vets do not! Ongoing inflammation, if a partial tear is misdiagnosed, can make ACL repair more complicated later on. It destroys the tissue.
