 I'm almost embarresed to admit this but thought this might me the only place I can.  It's so horrible.

Our boxer i (18 months and very sweet) is   usually crated when we are not around, but Saturday night we left her loose in the house as she's been so good lately.

We can home, the bird cage had been knocked off the table, opened......the birds feather and a small bit of blood were the only signs of tweetie.

Of couse this was upsetting to my kids, but I'm not sure what to think.  Anyone have any advice?

Well they do have a prey instinct - BUT I would try to curb it by training your dog to ignore small animals if you plan on getting another bird the dog can get to..

You can so this by everytime you get near a small animal - squirrel, etc. - when they start to posture (stand erect and tense) give a correction of some sort - it could be a touch - or a leash correction, etc.
