Problem with puppy! Please Help

So lastnight my puppy Tank started coughing but nothing would come up. Its almost like a dry heave or if he cant get something out of his throat and he has been doing it all night. He has his first puppy app. tomorrow at 10. From what I have read so far it sounds like it could be kennel cough, but the breeder I got him from gives him shots for it. I was even there when she gave him the last one before I could take him home, so I dont know if it is. He has been to pets smart a couple of times and met other dogs but not for long at least I wouldnt think long enough to get it.  From what I read kennel cough passes on its own but can it affect a puppy in any way? Thanks for the help.

A concerned Dad,
 Grant

Hmmm,, I'm not sure what that could be. It does sound like kennel cough, or it could just be a cold. It's good you have a vet appointment tomorrow. Let us know how it goes.
It may not be nothing, but as you have an appt already, I would definitely ask your vet. My understanding about kennel cough, is even tho you get the vaccine, it doesn't cover all strains of it..Someone correct me if I'm wrong on this....I actually don't get mine vaccinated for it..I would only do so if I had to kennel them, but with puppies, yes definitely...

Let us know what your vet says....
Turns out it was kennel cough, but other than that he is a healthy little boy
Well, I'm glad you found out what was wrong with Tank. He should be feeling a lot better in a few days. Glad he's healthy other than the KC.
oh my gosh, I am stunned to read this, last night my new pup did the exact same thing, coughing with nothing coming up, amazing, dry heaving, I am taking him in this morning... how did they treat him???

my pup had it, too.  totally treatable with antibiotics.
Was this something that was always there and evident, or did it come and go? Because last night in the middle of the night she was coughing and dry heaving, and this morning she is fine, able to bark and whimper and "talk" perfectly, with no signs of irritation or anything else. Were your pets always coughing, or did it come and go? I have had Boxers with allergies that do this same thing, but it was a bit different last night... anyone please help!!
it can flare up at different times.  and kennel cough is really common with puppies.  i would just bring the pup into the vet and get 'em checked out!    :)
thanks! How do they test for it?? just curious!
the vet checks him out, listens to chest/heart, and usually takes a stool sample.  you may want to call them and see fi they need that.
Both of ours have had it.  They can treat it with an antibotic or if it's not too bad, it will run it's course in a couple of weeks.  I know it sounds horrible but it didn't seem to bother them.  It would be most noticable when they played or first thing in the morning.

We gave ours a little bit of honey to coat their throats and help suppress cough.  The vet can also give you a cough suppressant.
Kennel cough is very common in puppies despite getting the vaccine..Robitussin works very well to help supress the cough. Glad Tank is doing well despiter the KC....
Glad to know that he is well-aside from the kc.

They just gave me some antibotics to give him to help speed up the process. Tank would start coughing like every hr or so for about five mins and then it would go away. But he seems to be doing better now. The vet also said that sometimes heartworms can bring on KC not to scare you or anything, but I would take a stool sample with you to the vet thats what I did and they checked it for heartworms other wise they have to take if from your puppy and I dont know how much he/she would like that. Good Luck!
Usually a heartworm test is done by taking blood. Fecal tests check for other worms or parasites such as tapeworm, roundworm, etc.

Maybe it was roundworm then. Too many worms HAHA!
hi i just got my boxer pup 2 weeks ago and he has been doing great except he woke up about 6 am this morning doing that dry heaving.  his belly doesn't hurt when i touch it and he wants to play but he's making that noise if it is kennel cough do you have to go to the vet or will it work it self out like when we get colds?  also if he doesn't have to go to the vet is there some stuff i can give him at home?
Hi welcome to the forums!  :)
If it is KC you need to go to the vet and pick up some antibiotics. It will clear up pretty easy, and it is very common in puppies.
Thank you,
i did take dozer to the vet and they gave him antibiotics and now he is bouncing around like crazy back to his old clowny self! :p
