Hey all!

My neighbor is using rat poison to combat a problem they are having in their garage. The problem is that we keep finding dead mice/rats in our yard.

So my question is how do I keep Gypsy protected? Do mice leave droppings of the poison around before they die?

Go buy some rat traps, give them to your neighbor. Ask them to stop using poison. Or watch your dogs closely when they’re outside

Yeah, going to depend how friendly you are with your neighbor. Could do exactly what bxrbgood said and see if they will switch to something that isn't poison and just explain that you are finding a bunch of poisoned rodents in your yard and worried about your dogs safety. If not on the best of terms, I would go out before you let her out, clean up any dead rodents, and also keep a close eye on her when you are out there with her.

I agree with Matt74. Either way, I would go out with him when he's outside because you don't want him messing with a dead rat poisoned or not. Ick! Hopefully your neighbor will be reasonable and understanding. Best of luck!

I hate rat poison, if an animal eats a rat that was poisoned it can kill them. Just last month there was a mountain lion found dead due to rat poisoning from eating a poisoned animal.

I would definitely try to nicely ask the neighbor to use rat traps instead.

I wish I could help. I tried to google the droppings, feces, etc... which you probably did too to see if they can impact your pet, but I can't find anything. Your vet or an emergency vet probably would know. There's so much wrong w/ the 'normal' rat droppings, that it's highly likely the poison would be in them too.

It's great that you know about this so you can look out for it and address it with your neighbor.

I had a neighbor, years ago, who threw packets of Tomcat rat poison over the fence into our yard. I called the DNR office, and they told me exactly how dangerous this stuff was. I think one small packet could have killed several dogs. They offered to come to the house to investigate, but by then the neighbor had stopped. They have to be in a protective case. This person also shot all kinds of rabbits. Yuk!
