Sedating Your Dog... cuz' you don't have time for it!????

Ok, so we went to Odin's first day of his puppy education course and he behaved very well. It was mostly just listening and getting to know each other and trying the "pay attention" or "look" command. So I'm not really posting about any of that. Today at the class, sitting next to us... there was a 4 month old great dane... which was like at LEAST TWICE Odin's size! He was soooo gorgeous. I wanted to steal him!! Next to him was another 4 month old pup but he was a boxer!!

Anyway, the trainer made a joke about us drugging Odin before the class cuz' he was asleep craddled in my lap like a baby. The woman with the Great Dane (Rufus) was like yeah I give Rufus benedryl to sedate him (she mentioned something else too). The trainer was like "...huh??" She stated that she worked at a bar and would come home at 6am in the morning and give him one because she was tired from dealing with drunks all night. WTH!???? She also stated when we went around telling everyone about ourselves and what behavior we want to change... her's was "...I want him to grow up! I don't want a puppy!" WTH!?????? This woman needs a reality check. The trainer was pretty straight forward with her about how she should not be sedating the dog for any reason. That it's a puppy and to keep it from being energetic like that is wrong. That maybe the puppy isn't for her.... of course she didn't do that infront of any of us. Though she did kind of say umm okay... that's not good... when she brought it up infront of us. I WANT HIM! Though if she gives it away (which she's considering... shows you how much she wants the dog) it's going to go to the other trainer.... THOUGH HUBBY REALLY WANTS IT!... Me too... he's awesome!

Just had to vent about it... *shakes head* I just think that's crazy!!

I've heard of people sedating their dogs after surgeries and stuff because they aren't allowed to rough house.. but doing it for selfish reasons??? Gooodddd lord... I think you and hubby should definitely try to get him! *hint*hint*... I can't wait to start puppy classes in July! I'm so pumped to see other puppies! Boxers aren't all that popular around here like retrievers and stuff are, so you're lucky!!

As for that woman... 2x4 please!!  :aua:
Re: Sedating Your Dog... cuz' you don't have time for it!???

I might understand what she means about wanting him to grow up.

I'm anxious for Diesel to grow up so I can see what he looks like as a big dog, but thats about it.

What a crazy woman to be sedating her dog. what is wrong with people..

Yeah... I sure as heck would love to see that great dane full grown! He's SO gorgeous! But she means because he has TOO much energy!!!????? That's the ONLY reason why we went the boxer way over the great dane way... BECAUSE they aren't that energetic. She wanted him to grow up so he'd stop acting like a puppy... and be more lazy... I guess so she wouldn't have to spend so much money on MEDS!! I too know how you feel DieselsMom, I can't wait to see what Odin looks like FULL SIZE!! Though when I try and move him I already think, "Gawd! Move your immense weight off my BLANKET!!" Does anyone elses boxer lean their weight into you when you're trying to move them off of something??? LOL It's hilarious but slightly annoying when you're freezing your butt off and he's putting all his weight into you so you can't get him off the blanket to cover up better!
Re: Sedating Your Dog... cuz' you don't have time for it!???

lol - Yup, Kiah is always leaning into me with her full weight and she is about 52lbs (maybe more now) and I can't move the blanket.  I got so I leave more of the blanket off the side of the bed so when she does that I at least have some blanket.  She's not spoiled!

Oh good lord, the things people do...we regularly joke about giving Brady benedryl or nyquil so he will sleep through the night, but we are JOKING about it! (He wants to get in bed with us, so he paces the room in the middle of the night, then settles back in with Abby for a bit. He's wide awake and ready to play at 4:30 am. We think his old family probably had an early schedule.) To think someone actually does that! Come home, take him for a nice long walk and then settle in with him on the couch, our babies always need to doze after their walks and they ALWAYS need some cuddlin' on the couch!
You know, I am not a fan of getting up with him at 4:30 am but he's my baby and I could NEVER think of giving him up because of this. I have a hard time believing that some people truly care about their pets when they are so easily willing to give them up because of stupid things like that.
Re: Sedating Your Dog... cuz' you don't have time for it!???

That is absolutely insane!  I would never think of doing that to Blue.  Although he puppy rants can be annoying sometimes, it's so cute when he runs around like a crazy man.  There are times I'm so annoyed with him that I want to scream, then he does something so adorable that the frustration goes away and I just laugh.

Blue actually started puppy class yesterday too!  I guess he wasn't a fan of a little pug puppy that was there, but then he slept through the whole introduction process.  Looks likes it's a trend with Boxers, maybe they are a little bored with lecturing
Re: Sedating Your Dog... cuz' you don't have time for it!???

That is horrible!!! the only time i have ever sedated a dog other than surgeries is my friend has a chihuahua that freaks out when she needs to get her nails trimmed. We do sedate to calm her enough to allow for the nail trimming, but she is up and running within 30 minutes!! i cant believe she got a dog, why get a puppy if you dont WANT A puppy??
Re: Sedating Your Dog... cuz' you don't have time for it!???

Now how did I miss this? I am totally floored Mastray!! What kind of imbecile does that to a pup? And then have the balls to anounce it in front of class? That poor pup will not be with her long, I can guarantee that...Just from what you heard her say, she has no business having a dog at all...What a shame and just reinforces why some people don't need to have animals!!!
Re: Sedating Your Dog... cuz' you don't have time for it!???

She said saved the dog from someone who was abusing it. Though in reality what the heck does she think she's doing!???? She said she has cats. I dog is completely different than a cat. Cats do very well with little attention (not like I'm say that's okay... though some times that's how THEY like it). Dogs are not like that and they are high engery... EVEN MORE SO... PUPPIES!!

This woman needs to give the dog up. If she's considering... then it's obvious that is what she needs to do. It was strange too how she realized people weren't okay with her sedating the dog... her story changed... to RARELY!!.... HEH! She ticks me off!
Re: Sedating Your Dog... cuz' you don't have time for it!???

I say beat her unconsciuos and dognap him...It's obvious that he would be a wonderful addition to your already colorful home...

so that pup, went from being abused to being sedated from someone who 'rescued' it.

what a horrible little life he's having so far! someone needs to really save this dog.
Re: Sedating Your Dog... cuz' you don't have time for it!???

That woman should be sedated and while she is you need to snatch the dog. That is one screwed up woman. Ive never heard of anyone doing that to a dog. I had a Great Dane all throughout my childhood until he passed away on my great grandmas funeral, yeah it was a heartbreaking day for me especially since i was only 11 yrs old. I want another one they are great companions. I would say a lot of things to her for sure if i would have met her and she told me that.

That poor dog.  :(  What is wrong with people?  :aua:
Re: Sedating Your Dog... cuz' you don't have time for it!???

That's what that trainer is trying to do. Hubby really wants him and then when I go to TX I get to see Nikki... my late mothers chihuahua that is with my dad. I told hubby I wanted to bring her back! She's SO awesome... the smartest dog ever! I could see the house now... a 2 yr old, a puppy boxer, puppy great dane, a chihuahua, and eight ferrets... OH AND a BABY on the WAY!! LOL Yeah... that would be something else!!
Re: Sedating Your Dog... cuz' you don't have time for it!???

I actually know someone who does something similar with their 10 month old baby.  They keep the child awake ALL DAY LONG, won't put her down for naps and if she starts dosing off they pick her up and distract her to keep her awake.  She does not get any down time at all from the moment she gets up in the morning until she's put back to bed (at 10.30 at night -remember, she's 10 months old).  And when she's put to bed, it's with a soother dipped in Dozol (a medicine that's only supposed to be used to help teething children sleep better).  And why all this effort to keep the child awake all day?  So that she'll be so exhausted she'll sleep through the night and they won't have their own sleep interrupted by her crying for anything.

Some people really are a convincing argument for eugenics...
Re: Sedating Your Dog... cuz' you don't have time for it!???

That is nothing but child abuse! Sick F*#%ing people!
Re: Sedating Your Dog... cuz' you don't have time for it!???

Wow... I agree  with tootsie! Sarah started sleeping through the night at 2 months old so I don't really know what that's like. My friend has a baby boy who's 9 months who wakes her up at all hrs of the night multiple times and won't take long enough naps during the day... she's always exhuasted... but she'd NEVER do THAT!!
Re: Sedating Your Dog... cuz' you don't have time for it!???

my daughter has always been a good sleeper (like me lol), so I never had to deal with that, but that is seriously child abuse.

but when she gets a cold, and I have to give her medicine, even her 'night time' kids stuff makes her hyper.
Re: Sedating Your Dog... cuz' you don't have time for it!???

My daughter Brianna has been sleeping through the night since she was 3 months. My son Brandon, he was a different story. He had colic for the first three months, and didn't start sleeping through the night until 29 months...yep you read right, he was almost 2 1/2 years old until I got a full nights sleep. So, I do know what it is like to be very sleep deprived. Needless to say, I would never even think to give him meds to sleep through the night, or not allow him to nap during the day. That is just wrong on so many levels.
