Hi Everyone!

My name is Vanessa.  I am not a current boxer owner but probably will be by the end of the week.  My younger brother is moving(long story) to Guam and can't take his boxer Nita with him.  Well he could but she is 9yrs old and would have to go into quarantine for 3mos and it can get pretty warm there plus they have a bad flea and tick problem.  She wouldn't make it.  He called me a few nights ago and asked if we could take her.  We hadn't planned on getting a dog for at least another year so my DH and I talked it over.  I am pretty sure we are going to do it.  She is a very sweet brindle girl.  My brother adopted her when she was 2(at least they think she was 2) and he has had her for 7 years.  I have dog sat for her and she is familiar with my home.

I am glad I found this site.  I have had dogs before but not a boxer.  I may need some advice with some issues that I know that Nita has.  She is very high energy.  You would never guess she is 9.  She has never had any training or guidance in her life with my brother.  He is young and not home a lot and lived in an apartment and she was left home a lot.  One of the first things I am going to do when I get her is take her to my vet for a dental.  Her teeth are so bad that one tooth has a hole all the way through.  My brother loves her but has had some bad luck with his finances lately.  I guess she is a notorious garbage dog and counter surfer.  She is on purina dog chow now getting 2-3 meals a day but is still a little too ribby for my taste.

I have my work cut out for me but I can handle it.  I have had some obediance experience.  I plan on getting her out on regular walks, good food and training and I hope she can calm down a bit.

Wish me luck!

Welcome to the forum! I'm glad that you are able to take Nita in and provide a good home for her. It does sound like you will have some work ahead of you, but the return of boxer love makes it so worth it!  :D

***oh and I wouldn't count on her calming down too much. Boxers are like puppies forever!

I guess I am not afraid of the energy but would like to redirect it in a more constructive manner.

Welcome to the forum and kudos for agreeing to take in Nita....As an owner of a senior as well, I have to say they are the best, altho Samson at 11 isn't very active anymore...The best way to deal with some of that energy is exercise! Daily walks would be good as you can also work on basic obedience as well...There's a couple Sticky topics in the training session about teaching recall, one is a game that you may find helpful as well if her "hearing" seems to be an issue...Lol, Boxers are notorious for turning a deaf ear and if she hasn't had a lot of training, you may find those topics helpful....

That would actually be really cool. I am in West Bend, what area are all of you Wisconsinites in?  I think some socializing for Nita would be great.  I don't know yet how she does with other dogs but I think she will be ok.  She loves cats(a little to enthusiastically).  I have 3 cats and they are terrified of her but I think they will get used to her.  From what I have been told she is ok with cats but plays rough.  That is going to be one of my biggest challenges with her.

Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome.  :bsty:

I am in Janesville but have met Nexu with his dog Lola in Racine at the dog park there. It is a huge dog park with lots of paths, water and wooded areas.  I believe someone else is in the Racine/Milwaukee area.
