Hi everyone my 11 year old boxer girl suddenly hurt her back end yesterday. She has been doing just fine no issues then when she ran up the stairs she yelped and can't even walk on her back end without being in pain and falling over. I took her to the vet and he said discosponylitis but I don't think that's what's going on. She was sent home on prednisone and muscle relaxer. Has anyone ever had something like this happen? Thinking about a second opinion she just in so much pain. Thank you

I am so sorry Roxie got hurt. Did he check her knees out as well? I would maybe get a second opinion she could have slipped a disk or hurt a muscle I haven't had this happen (thank goodness) the prednisone should kick in in a couple of days it should reduce any swelling she may have. I hope they told you the prednisone will make her drink and pee alot she may not be able to hold it so you may need to put something under her dog bed she may leak it will also make her very hungry. I hope Roxie will be ok we will keep you guys in our prayers.

I am concerned she has IVDD. I have 2 other boxer one ruptured both ACL (did surgery on both) and my other boxer did have discopondylitis confirmed with MRI and his symptoms are completely different then hers. We have to carry her out to potty and she has trouble doing that and will just fall over. I think I will call a neurology specialist tomorrow. We have waterproof dog bed but I am using potty pads also.
Thank you

Oh I am sorry. I have no idea what is going on put with pulled muscles and such a heating pad on low is a good idea.

Acupuncture if available might be helpful? Hopefully she will get better. But in the meantime, what will/should be helpful for you both would be a "Harness," like this. :

I used pne for my Rocky (GSD) as well as being uh, anti social (to be kind) he was also a "Wobble Dog," Ataxia. And as he got into adulthood he would struggle to get to his feet. He
could get to his feet . But it was a bit awkward for him but he was fine once on his feet.

But I wanted to make both our lives a bit easier so I got him a "Full Body Harness," similar to this.

https://www.amazon.com/Solvit-Lifti...ss+for+handicapped+dogs&qid=1621223284&sr=8-3

He was 113 lbs and GSD's are Long Dog's! The back handles made it easy to help him to his feet and the rear handle made it easy to load him in the car. We did tons of daily driving around. :)

With him I never had much use for the shoulder sling but I could have used it if necessary. For your girl, It's not gonna be much help for pain ...

But if she is able to stand you can keep her from failing over. I know that is heartbreaking. :(

My Rocky dog is also 11 years old. Just this past year he started to have pancreatitis episodes. There were a couple times he got up and his hind legs stopped working or would seem to give out once I thought he was seizing. He hasnt had seizures in the past. And one time he was having pain in his right shoulder blade (i guess) and couldnt move and yelped when i tried to move him. It came on very sudden. I almost thought he was hit by a car. Pancreatitis from what ive learned is common in older boxers and the inflamation and gas can cause them pain in their legs or cut off nerves to those extremeties. Its not always from infections. Their pancreas can become inflamed from high fatty foods, too many table scraps and kibble. It can also be caused by trauma, like seperation anxiety. I had a heart attack and was gone for 4 days and Rocky doesnt like his momma gone.
I started buying canned dogfood with low fat and high protein thats also a probiotic. But while he had pancreatitis i fed him bland chicken with white rice and mix in with it a little curcumin (anti inflammitory), and lowfat cottage cheese or greek yogurt and feed him in small portions

I think that I would definitely get a second opinion. She could have dislocated a hip or worse. I'm so sorry she is hurting. prayers and good vibes headed her and your way. :)
