Re: Thoughts on Luther's back leg...

maybe he sprained it or bruised it and after playing hard and not letting it rest that night it has started to hurt him again? just a thought

Re: Thoughts on Luther's back leg...

Probably what Donna said the other option would be that he injured his knee cap and it is giving trouble off and on.  I would give it a few days to see what happens.  There is no break because they wont put any weight on a broken leg.

Re: Thoughts on Luther's back leg...

I think I would rest him for a few days if he were mine and observe.  Taking him on leash walks and not letting him ram around.  I have had 2 boxer males in the past that ruptured ACL's, so I would monitor this to make sure it's not something like that.

Re: Thoughts on Luther's back leg...

I do not think it would be ACL.  If it was, he would not be running hard on it and jumping really hard.  At this point, he is on crate rest with leash walks.  I will keep my eye on it for a few days.

This morning, he was not limping at all and was walking and acting normal.  I guess we shall see.

Re: Thoughts on Luther's back leg...

We experienced a partial ACL injury after a fall on the ice.  They thought it was a sprain because he'd be up and running full force after resting for awhile.  I think they're difficult to diagnose, we needed to x-ray his leg at a Veterinary School under sedation.  Probably not what you're dealing with, but by the time we did surgery there was a lot of arthritis that had set in because of the inflammation.  The surgery was much more extensive because we waited over a year.

I think there are other things you can do for a partial tear early on to avoid surgery.

How's Luther's leg doing? Samson actually did something like that a couple years ago, i believe he just pulled something, then he would forget and start over doing it again...Hoping he's doing allright now

Re: Thoughts on Luther's back leg...

That sounds like what Ziggi does to his leg.  We took him to the vet last year for it and had X-rays done and then on to a specialist to see if it was ACL.  Thank goodness it wasn't.  They said if he is putting any weight on it, it wasn't ACL because usually if a dog has torn it they won't put any weight on it.

Ziggi limps sometimes when he has played very hard or was running in the deeper snow.  Our vet recommended low dose coated asprin (we use bayer right now but have also use ascription for our other dog).  We give him one in the morning and one at night on the days he is limping more and limit his playing.  Normally it takes 1-3 days of him on the aspirin and limited activity and he is fine.  I would recommend checking with your vet just to make sure what is actually wrong with him and see what they recommend for him.

I took Luther to the Vet today to have his leg checked out.  He said that it was a sprain and no damage to the Knee or ACL.

He really just needs to rest it.. (ya right).  How do you make a Boxer relax...LOL

I will make sure he gets plenty of lap time and kisses.

Thanks for all the repy's..
