Hello:

I'm new to this forum and am wondering what others recommend for flea/tick prevention.  My female was treated for lyme's disease last year and I have refrained from using Frontline, etc. because of horror stories from reactions.  Have any of you  had any problems? What products do you use?

Thanks for the help.

Personally I have used both frontline and Advantix..  I have never had any problems with either one. I know that some people are opposed to them becuase of the harsh chemicals that are in them. And to be honest I totally agree with trying to find an alternative, but I have just not sound one that works. I also have known people that have fed their dogs Garlic to help prevent fleas, however I also know that garlic is related to the onion and that onions are toxic to dogs. So I am not really sure of any other ideas other then Frountline or Advantix and like I said I have never had a problem with either.

I am sure you will get plenty of other responses.

We used Frontline last time and both had explosive diarrhea about 4 hours after application which lasted about 24 hours. Vet said she didn't think it was a reaction but I honestly don't know what else it could have been to affect both with same symptoms at the same time.  We've decided to give it one more try, if it happens next time I'm going back and re-reading the posts about garlic and brewers yeast. Some on here have had good results using these, maybe they'll jump in with "how to" :D Welcome to the forum btw

Thanks so much--I'm not so worried about the fleas, it's the ticks as I'm surrounded by wooded areas.  I want to do the best by my dogs but I'm just concerned about any neurological side effects.

I use Frontline Plus monthly, with no problems.  I also use Advantix monthly for worms, including heartworms.  I live in Georgia, which is heaven for any type of pest.  Treatment is a necessity down here!

I use Interceptor for heartworm and K9-Advantix for fleas and ticks.  Deer ticks are really bad here and seem to be getting worse each year.  During the winter months, usually Dec to mid-March, I don't use flea and tick but continue to use Interceptor covers hook and round worms also.

I work for a Pest Control company. We sell flea and tick dips and shampoos and are fixing to start carrying Frontline and Advantix. The main active ingredient in Frontline is fipronil, which you can also by in a liquid form for Termites, and in granular form for ant control in your yard. But the active is much stronger in the Frontline. I spoke with my manager and on one of them the main ingredient is Permethrin, which is also the main active in most of your shampoos and sprays. Flea season is starting here in southeast Texas and with all the calls we have been getting, its going to be an active one.

P.S. home remedy-Skin so soft by Avon(I hear it really works)

Also on the advice of Sharon, it helps if you switch up products..Use the stronger one, like Advantix( I use that) in the summer and the frontline in the winter..They can build up an immunity..Also a small amount of minced garlic in the food, like a 1/4 tsp works very well too...
