Hi
Our 10 month old Boi was diagnosed with an epithelial corneal ulcer today after we noticed him squinting and rubbing his eye this morning. Probably due to a scratch from a plant.
He has antibiotic ointment a few times per day and a NSAID after his dinner for a week, then review.
Hé won’t keep his e-collar on - he gets straight out of it- he runs around frantically when it’s on.
We’ve decided to keep him next to us and observe him for a week.

Are there any alternatives that would help him overnight?
Our dogs sleep with us on our bed- we’re worried we’ll be asleep and he’ll have a scratch -fest on his eye.
Thanks for any input x

Mine ended up having to have eye surgery when the medications didn't clear it up after several attempts. She had to wear the e-collar after the surgery for a couple weeks. Ask your eye specialist for some ideas on how to make the transition.

They make different kinds of e collars now but I would guess they want one that will cover his face so he can't paw at his eye a friend of mines Boxer had to have one and she would not tolerate it either so she got one of those soft e collars he may tolerate that better my previous female Boxer had a ear injury and they put one on her and she about tore the car apart on the way home with that thing on so it had to go and I resigned myself just to keep a very close eye on her. Unfortunately unless the e collar covers the who face area its not going to do you much good but hopefully it will go ahead and heal up and won't be itchy much longer.

Boi is so cute! I hope the eye heals up soon! I've had at least 3-4 incidents like this with my last boxer. He was always scratching up his eyes. Usually the treatment you described worked but we definitely used the very hard plastic large ecollar. I just dont see how they can escape it if it's on properly. Do you have the really stiff plastic type? Good luck! I would not allow him to sleep without it.

I agree with Wennox, do whatever you need to do to keep the e-collar on him. The first time my boy had a corneal ulcer, i went through the same experience. I thought he was going to destroy my house or really hurt himself. The eye did not heal and we ended up having surgery done plus more weeks of drops and still the e collar. So you might as well have him get used to it right from the get go.

Update.
Our Boi did very well and his ulcer had healed by the following week when our Vet reviewed him.
We did chlorsig ointment 3 times per day.
We bought a packet of sterile gauze squares and put a big dollop of the ointment onto the gauze, then wiped that onto his eye. That way we avoided stabbing him in the eye with the end of the ointment tube.
Unfortunately, the Metacam he was on for pain caused him to vomit blood and then poop blood. We had stopped it before this started to happen as he became very lethargic and lost his appetite.
Back to the vet- on Losec twice per day for 2 weeks, and a course of Flagyl antibiotics for his gastrointestinal bleeding.
He’s finally back to his normal self and off of all meds - eating better and full of energy.
This was a rough 3-4 weeks.
Here he is sharing an apple with me a few days ago
