Not quite Boxer related... but my hubby and I are taking a trip to Portland OR at the end of Aug and I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction on fun things to do while we're there! We're flying into Seattle, WA (tickets are much cheaper) and driving to Portland. Hubby is in a wedding there on Sat but other than that we have almost a whole week to play tourist! My husband went to HS out there, so he knows of a few things to do but he's kinda boring... (I'm so mean) and I def don't want to sit around doing nothing! I'm an East Coast girl so this is my first trip to OR / WA! Thanks for any info!

ohmigosh! the whole Starbucks topic is something I'm trying to avoid! My hubby is teasing me relentlessly b/c Seattle is like the Mecca of Starbucks! I am / was never a big coffee drinker but I kid you not, Starbucks turned me into a straight up addict! About 2 weeks ago I said enough! I don't want to be the kind of person who can't function w/o my daily cup of coffee! I'd get huge headaches right around 2-3pm if I skipped Starbucks... anyways long story short I quit cold turkey! It took me 4 (bitchy) days from hell to start feeling human again. I don't have the caffeine craving anymore but damn I can't shake the taste! I want a Caramel Macchiato so bad! My step-daughter taunts me everytime we drive by a Starbucks saying "ooooh Beka... look a Starbucks... don't ya want one...!" Evil little child I tell ya! lol

If you're going to be in Seattle for a while (Sorry, I've only been to Portland once, and I was like 10) and you're into music & music history, you could check out the Experience Music Project, next to Seattle Center- they've got some cool Hendrix memorabilia.

It sounds kind of cheesy, but my fiancee and I had a great time on the Duck Boat tour. There's also a tour of "old Seattle", most of which is now underground.

I think that if you're going to fall off the coffee wagon, you might as well fall off into a good cup. Here are a few suggestions:

http://www.espressovivace.com/intro.html - Multiple locations in Seattle, locally owned, too. Owner David Schomer is probably the best at his craft in N. America today.

http://www.zokacoffee.com/ - I've only been there a handful of times, but both espresso & brewed coffee were excellent.

http://www.stumptowncoffee.com/ - In Portland. I've ordered nearly all of their blends and single origin roasts and have not been disappointed yet.

Really, it's hard to get a bad cup of coffee anywhere in Seattle- just steer clear of the chain stores: S-bux, Seattle's Best (owned by S-bux), Coffee Bean... There are also plenty of places for foodies, too. Stop by Mario Batali's dad's shop, Salumi, for some great sandwiches, salami & sausage.

Luckily, you don't have to wake up that early. IIRC, they keep the show going until about 11am. It's actually pretty entertaining- if you manage to catch a fish, it's yours for free!
