What a surprise I got today. My stepson Jared and his stepson Glenn stopped by this afternoon for a visit and much to my amazement, little miss Blitzen WENT OFF!!!!! Ran across the room from them and barked, barked, barked with her little nub of a tail wagging furiously the whole time. Donner looked at her liked she'd lost her mind and went and said hello!  I asked them to give her a few minutes, no touching no eye contact and figured she'd come around but no way. She eventually got close enough to sniff and give a couple tentative licks to Glenn but was NOTHING like her usual happy go lucky self 8O I should add that she's seen them several times and been just fine but it's been a few weeks. Also, when she's out walking or going places she has no problems with people or dogs.
I realize we don't have a lot of people come and go, kids are grown - Rachel is in SC and the Jared works a wacky schedule.Usually during the week it's just us and the dogs. I work days and Kelly eves so it's pretty quiet. My concern is this....is this a passing phase?? I plan on asking a couple friends to stop by on their way home from work this week to see if her reaction is the same. Maybe she just needs more practice????

That must have been wuite a sight Lori, especially with Donner watching her like she had a few screws loose  Good idea to have a few people stop by, maybe it was an off day, but doesn't hurt to keep intoducing new people into her life...Blitz the midgit guard dog, I love it :)

All 4 of my dogs do that but after a few mins they all calm down they are used to it just being Rissa & I & them so they have to show it is their house. after 2 or 3 mins they calm down and go about their own business

bo will bark at strangers who come into the house until we tell him it's ok...once he knows it's ok...he loves them up!  Jetta loves all people, no matter what and just wants attention from whoever comes over.

Britney is still clueless on door bells.. But when one rings I try to give her a treat...lol so she will think good things when it rings as she gets older.

But in the yard when we get up at 430am she is now much more alert. She will hear something and freeze in their usual stance and listen.

Right from the time Mike was 10 weeks old, he barks when the doorbell rings or when someone clangs the iron gate. And the bark isn't the same as his bark when he wants to pee or when he is hungry. It is a more dominant bark, a menacing one. If I let him, he would sniff the other person. There are only one or two people who he has continued to bark at after sniffing. Mike also has the habit of not letting strangers take anything away from my house. So he hates it when the garbage collector comes :)

Apparently the "stranger danger" phase is passing. Had a friend from Kansas in town last night who stopped by the house and even though Blitzen barked a couple times she was OVERJOYED to meet Sherry. Gave kisses and snuggled with her too  :D She's still got a ways to go though....every time Sherry got up to do anything, Blitzen barked at her all over again!! It's a work in progress

well i think its very cute lol..shes finding her "big girl" bark hehe i think shes just growing up :D

Isis watches b/c shes cant listen...patrols the 2 gates...at night she lays on the couch with the window overlooking the backyard and she can see the gate and anyone that has the nerve to walk by outside it...she sees NO NEED for anyone to walk by lol...and the front window..ooo BOY !!!! day time is fine..as soon as its dark its guard time..if even a bird thinks its ok to walk by shes all over it with her BIG GIRL BARK...

when she does this she barks looks at me barks looks at me...like mom mom theres an intruder hurry up ..looks for me to say its ok with a pat or that i need to investigate...and of course shes right there if Onyx barks b/c he only barks when needed..

Isis learned all this on her own ..out of instinct..she didnt used to do this...so i think they all learn with how our everyday lives are...Blitzen i think is just doing what she thinks is her job hehe...i wish i had seen that ..i can visualize that little butt going like crazy hahaha

Sometimes I wish Vega would show some signs of that Guard instinct but nooo. Strangers, friends, family, They are all the same to her, "Oh someone is here to see ME! yeah. Oh Boy! I wil give you lots of kisses. Come here you salty person you!". Occassionally Vega will wake us up at 3 in the morning from her growling. I will get up and she will lead me to the front window put her paws onthe sill. Look growl a bit more lick me like, "yeah, You got my back" and growl some more. I will put her on her leash and try to take her out and she won't. As soon as I get back in she will bean and wiggle and run up stairs and take my spot ont he bed.

Julius is 8 months old and a natural born  guard dog.  if someone knocks on the door or if i  say the words "whos here?"  he barks, growls and runs to the door.  hes really intimidating   for people who have never met him but he is a sucker for anyone who comes over!!  in his mind anybody who comes over is coming here for him.    as soon as they are in the door he loves everybody.  but he will bark his head off if he cant see you and knows your there.  i must say it is reassuring to know if someone is coming unannounced they will be greeted.

Ky..I have always wondered if deaf dogs did that..its amazing I think..I would bet she can FEEL the vibration from her bark..and knows she's doing something..but it makes me amazed that they try, when they have never heard a real bark before...I am curious..it comes out like a "big Girl bark" right?? not some different sound?? She is truely one of a kind..what a sweetie!!
Ashley still is a bit young to do gaurd dog duty..but man she goes in full "alert" mode if the doorbell rings..runs at the door..head held high..nubby all up..and the fur on her back standing..but no bark yet..oh well..she DID wake us up in the middle of the night before DH went out of town..neighbor rang the bell at 11:30..and she growled as she bolted for the door..guess her "beauty sleep" was inturupted, and she was going to give him a piece of her mind..LOL
