Cosmo and Cori got into a pretty vicious fight last night. We were preparing dinner for the next night, which happened to contain raw beef. The dogs are always in the kitchen when we're preparing food, but this time something happened. I don't know who started it, but they started going at each other quite violently. Cosmo was bleeding a little from around his mouth. We had to separate them for a good 20 minutes to calm them down.

They have been doing this a bit more frequently in the past 2 weeks. We brought Cori home almost a month ago, and they play fight every day but it's never this vicious. It was really scary, and was really hard to break up.

Just a little background: Cosmo is 7 mos old, about 40lbs, not neutered yet. Cori is about 13 mos old, about 55-60 lbs. Sometimes they'll fight over a bully stick or a toy, but never this viciously. Ever since we brought Cori home she wolfs down her food, like she's never eaten before or is afraid someone will try to take it away from her. She was previously in homes where she was neglected and probably not fed on a daily basis. Aside from that, she is doing very well.

How can we stop this from happening? Should we just try to keep them out of the kitchen we we're preparing food ?

This has happened with Maggie and Herbie a few times before, I have become very diligent in putting them both in their kennels while I prepare and feed them.  Now all I have to do is grab their food bowls and they go to their kennels and laydown patiently waiting.

Hanna did resource guarding with food when we had Kash.  We always feed them in separate rooms and after a bit she outgrew it and knew he was not going to take her food.  So for feedings I would feed separate rooms or in crates.

Milo and Kaci have to be fed in their kennels...they do the same thing, fight over toys, food, treats, etc. Not all the time, but enough that they don't get rawhides and they have to be fed seperately.

I had to feed Delila in her crate for a few months, but now they can eat in the same room just seperate areas. It is so funny at meal time or when I say yum yum time Delila runs right in her crate and won't come out until Ekim starts to eat his food, then she will go to her dish and eat. If he doesn't eat first she won't eat. I do have to be a little careful with treats as Ekim gets a little mouthy, but she usually always waits for him to take his first. I have them come over to me and sit in front of me and they are not allowed to touch the treat until I say the word take it. I give Ekim his first, as he is the older one and then she gets hers. It seems that she knows her place in the pack. Now if I could only get her to stop rough housing him to death, but I am sure he will let her know when enough is enough.
