I was at the human park today, as opposed to the dog park, and this guy was admiring my lovely now 7 month old big boy Cactus.  Since day one when I took him home, my dog has loved sand.... he will do the boxer burn all over it and then get to digging, which I allow at the human park since I don't allow it at home.  This guy was noticing how Cactus kept "getting the sand" (translation- digging in the sand) and went on to tell me that boxers were bred to hunt badgers and burrowing animals.  ?????????????? I had assumed that they were bred for hunting water fowl- the underbite being that way to allow the dog to breathe while carrying the bird and not crushing it.  So question one is- what were boxers bred for?

Next, the way Cactus digs is hilarious.  He will dig with one paw at first and then get to scooping with both paws at the same time doing a little hop as he clears out more sand...... is this a dog thing, a boxer thing or just a Cactus thing?

They were originally bred to hunt wild bear, boars and bulls, they were called "bull baiters".  They hunted in packs and their underbites were bred into them so that they could latch on to the wild animal and hold on till the hunters could make the kill.

I had one kill a woodchuck once.  He grabbed the big beast quickly by the neck.  Thru it up very hard into the air and snapped it's neck.  When in came back down and landed on the ground he walked over and peed on it and walked away.  It was dead as a door nail.  I try to keep mine under close watch as were we live we have bears and such.  They are hardwired for the hunt chase still, atleast mine is.  They too love to play in the sand and dig and slide around on it.  They are too funny to watch boxer buzzing around in it.

So is it just a Cactus thing that he uses both front paw and scoops as he is digging?

Maddie would dig to China if I let her!  8O  Now, Buster on the other hand did not ever dig. I guess it just depends on the dog.  :)

Henry does that.  He'll dig with one paw, then the other, then alternate between the two, then when he gets really serious, both go at the same time.  And we've left his ears floppy, so they bounce up and down while he's digging.  It is too cute and funny!  He only does it withe the sand, not the regular soil.
