OK i see that there are about 1 million posts on this but i would like to narrow mine just a bit.  I am currently feeding Buster Purina Puppy but would definately love switching him to a better food like RC or canidae.  My concern is with the semi-recent pet food recalls.  I see that RC was listed on there, canidae is not.  alot of the mentioned dry foods that were rated on the dog food "report Card" are listed on the FDA recall brands

purina, although not the healthiest on the report card, was not listed on the recall

any input

Brian

PS if it matters Buster is 8 months old and 50 lbs of muscle, can see last 3 ribs

I would go wit Canidae over RC-

RC is very commercialized and many of their lines have corn in it.  Canidae has no Corn, Wheat or Soy and many people like it on here. I had mine on it for awhile, but it was just a bit expensive for me.  My dogs fur, skin, and weight were the best on Canidae and during the period of Jetta being a finicky eater, she never had issue with Canidae.

Check out www.dogfoodanalysis.com  Canidae is a pretty good food, as are many others listed on that site.  I would shoot for at least a 4 star food.  None of the 6 star foods would be appropriate for Buster right now b/c they contain too much protein for a puppy.
Happy hunting!

IMO I would try out Canidae - it a great food ingredients wise and cost friendly.   Try it for a bit, then rotate to a new food.  I like to rotate kibbles (when I was on them).  Its keeps the dog interested and they dont get bored.  Also is a way to round out their balance in their meals.

thank you for posting the link!  there are a few stores close to here.  YAY!  they aren't the typical pet stores though.  i kinda figured it wouldn't be in our petsmart or petco.

I like Chicken soup for the puppy/dog lovers soul.  Side by side next to Canidae I think CS is a better deal and a better food.  That is my personal opinion.

First 4 ingrediants of  Canidae all stages dry: Chicken Meal, Turkey Meal, Brown Rice, White Rice

First 4 of Chicken Soup Puppy: Chicken, turkey, chicken meal, ocean fish meal

I like that Chicken Soup has its first 4 ingrediants as meat sources and is not loaded with rice.  I like that CS's first 2 ingrediants are real chicken and turkey meat and not chicken and turkey meal.  The 2 foods are very comparable in their nutritional label but CS is a lot less expensive.  At least at my pet store it is.  CS also has DHA in their puppy food.  Its the stuff that baby formula companies are advertising as helping brain and eye development.

Here is a great article I found on how to interpret what the dog food ingrediant label really means.

the problem with the CS- the chicken and turkey include water- if you take the water content away, they would be much further down the list...not in the top four...so I would say they are pretty comparable content wise

RC is a great food, but IMO a bit on the expensive side because the sell to commercial stores, but I think its great since they removed the corn from their boxer 26, and sure if you do some research you can find it at a reasonable price outside of Petco / petsmart.

A good thing to do as well is write tp the companies you are interested in and ask if they will send you a sample to try  :) I'm rather limited where I am to what I can buy so Chicken Soup is what I feed mine, the new puppy will no doubt go on it as well
