What type of sign and Training?

1534 Views 14 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  Guest
We had a fence put up over the last few days.  They're coming tomorrow to finish and we're having gates put up on either side.  My question is what type of sign could I put up to notify people that there's a dog and not to open the gate and to remember to shut it.  I don't want to put a "Beware of Dog" sign up.  Then some idiot is just going to think we have a vicious dog.  Any ideas?

Also, any tips on how to train her to stay inside the yard if the gate is ever open or left open?

Thanks!

You could buy like a "Boxer Xing" sign with a picture of a boxer on it here http://www.signswithanattitude.com/dog_signs/boxer.html
just make your own sign.
"GTFO my property" would be a good start. lol
When I lived in my previous house which had a fence I had padlocks on both gates. I don't trust anyone to shut the gate behind them!  :p

We decided to get locks for each gate....just to be safe!
Yup, we have padlocks on all our gates, these people out here, I don't trust further than I can throw...As far as signs, I rather like the Boxer themed signs myself..We have a long driveway and the Boxer Crossing sign I want to put at the bottom of the driveway, my favorite tho is the one about getting to the fence in 2.8 seconds
I would do the padlocks and a sign that says "Dogs in Yard"  so people don't cross the bondary.  I have my dogs "wait" before going out door and gates sometimes.  If you really want to inforce that command do it every time and say "let's go" to let them know that it's okay to walk thru.

LMAO at the signs. Just wanted to throw out here that years ago our home owners ins agent (who was also a friend) told us to NEVER put up a Beware of Dog sign. If the unthinkable should happen and someone is bit by your dog the sign is the same as saying "I know I have a dangerous dog" and your liability is guaranteed! Possibly the loss of your dog also 8O don't know if this still applies but thought I'd share.
I've tried to do some reading about whether signs can increase/reduce liability and my conclusion was it's a crapshoot.  An attorney who wants to sue you can and will argue anything.  If your dog bites someone, and you don't have a sign warning them, then they will most likely argue that you should have warned them.  If you warn them, then they will try to say you knew the dog was dangerous.  Damned if you do, damned if you don't.   So beyond any special dog laws in your state (which should be checked first), I think the best thing to do is to somehow (in whatever way you are comfortable with) is to warn people that their is a dog behind the fence.  I think this is only fair to neighborhood kids, utility workers, delivery guys, etc.  I do plan on putting up a Beware of Dog sign. Like a stop sign, it's easily recognizable by even people who don't know dogs.  You'd be amazed how many people can't read or don't read signs.

In the city of Boston, there is actually a "Pitbull ordinance" that requires you put up Beware of Dog signs at your residence.  But basically in the state of Massachusetts, if your dog bites someone you are liable, unless it's determined the person was trespassing or harassing the dog.

Good info Sully and yea I had wondered the same thing. I feel you should at least have something posted to let people know that there are dogs present...That a lot of times is enuf of a deterrent...
Thanks for the info everyone!  I think I'll get a boxer sign and the locks!  Then work on teaching Lola to "wait" at the gate.

We have locks on both gates...I'd love to have a Boxer sign, but our HomeOwners Assoc. doesn't allow any signs on your fence.
