What kind of collars do you guys use. As in harnesses, or chokers, or just normal ones. I have nylon clipy collars on my girls. But they dont seem to help with

issues. Just the other day Maddy wiggled out of her collar on one of the major highways and wouldnt come back, and i couldnt call her cause shes deaf. I dont

want to risk anything.

Also, tinkerbelle pulls quite a bit, and im working on it with her, but what do you think would help with this?

Thanks guys.

I use a HALTI head collar for when I was training heel!! It worked great with Roxy. Ive also tried a pinch collar which IMO doesnt work at all. She just kept pulling and pulling! Ive also used a choker(still do sometimes) I also bought a nylon choker which I use more often! Im in the same boat as you with the regular nylon buckle collars because no matter how tight it is she can wiggle out!! Im looking into buying a Martengale Collar next time we go to PetsMart! They are just like chokers in a way(they tighten but only to a certain point!)

I was thinking about a martingale! After a certain point of using the halti

head collar, do you think i would be able to switch back to a different one.

Or would she not learn? I dont know why those nylon collars are so easy

to get out of! Its very frustrating

Sure she would be able to! I just used it until she had a good heel!! It didnt take as long as I thought it was! I now can walk her on a regular collar!! I still use the HALTI when we go to PetsMart or someplace like that though!

Well that gives me hope! Sometimes with these dogs i just get very frustrated. Thanks for that little gleam of hope. haha.

My concern with a harness is that it would be uncomfortable for her.

Well I use a harness when they go for a swim. And on walks i use a Halti on Zeus and Dante. Zeus because of his redirected aggression and Dante because he likes to pull.

I've used a Halti with all of mine, altho Samson no longer needs one, so just a regular collar works for him...I am sure Lillyzmomma will be able to give you a lot more tips on how to work with your 2 as far as on walks..It is very scary to have your dog get loose off leash and not come..Check out the Sticky in the training section about teaching recall and you might want to stop in on Wed nite for our training chat... :)

Tried a few nylon collars and they never worked..I used the easy walk no pull harness just to help me train Chloe not to pull on the leash..It worked great and can now walk her without using it. We still use it when we know she is going to be around a lot of people or going to the pet store.

I bought this one (pic is not of my dog) and it's made walks sooo much easier - it tightens under the front legs when he pulls too hard - result he doesn't pull half as much. Voltaire doesn't mind it at all and it doesn't hurt him in any way. Only negative point is that it's rather difficult to put on at first....but you pick up the knack pretty quick. :)

Okay...As I've seen that we apparently have a few people here with Boxers I am going to do a topic on training a few very important, but equally life preserving topics such as recall, heel (on or off lead), and how to get your deaf buddy to pay more attention to you just because these babies are so special!!!  I also want to stress to those of you out there with hearing impaired or special needs Boxers that they have a tendency to be easier to train because hearing impaired Boxers don't have the distractions of sound and special needs Boxers are more likely to focus on your for cues!!!  We just need to reinforce this behavior (or retrain it) into something usefull and life saving!!!

It'll be up soon!!!

Looks like a pure Boxer with a non-Boxer ear crop.  (Essentially a Boxer with a Pitbull crop).  Blah!  Boxers should either be floppy or with a proper Boxer crop.  Putting a short pit-crop on a boxer is just asking for trouble!

Okay so i went to the pet store today, and i decided i was going to start off with the choker collars. Im not exactly thrilled about it,  but its just a starting point. If it doesnt work out, ill have to move on to a harness of some sort.

I defidently will start being more serious with recall and heel commands. Ill just have to find out something that works out for the deaf dog.

Thanks you guys.

TinkerbelleNdMaddy---

I'm going to have Willow (samsonsmom) post a training topic for training a deaf Boxer to heel, how to train recall, and how to train to hand signals.  We'll have it up, hopefully, tomorrow morning (Hawaii time).
