Default Hi All...Dog Sick and Looking for Help...Coughing, Stuffed Up

I'm a new member, but have used it has a resource for years. Much love! But now I've reached an issue that I need help with.

My ~9 yr old baby, Ali, has been coughing for about 4 weeks. The entire time he has been eating well and has a normal amount of energy. He has remained his happy self.

The first week I took him to Vet #1 and was prescribed antibiotics which I figured would cure the suspected kennel cough. I had never been to Vet #1 (2nd yr in FL and still trying different vets), but wasn't impressed. After the cough still being present on the 2nd week, I took him to Vet #2 and they did an X-ray. They said the heart was normal size and looked good (pulse was good / strong as well). The lungs were clear and the air passage isn't constricted and no growths were observed. Vet #2 told me to continue the antibiotic treatment and it should clear up. After another week, he was still coughing and getting worse. He would sometimes sneeze out a white/clear mucous if I locked him in the shower with me. I took him to Vet #2 again (different vet at same place) and they told me that I was originally prescribed the wrong dose of antibiotic for a dog of my size. He was getting 400 mg of doxy a day. The new antibiotic (Temaril-P) was prescribed at 600mg a day (first 4 days) and 300mg a day (next 4 days) and 150mg a day (final 4 days). He was also prescribed a steroid (begins with a 'P'). It's a horse pill.

He is finishing up this last batch of meds and nothing is working. Ali is happy, eating normal, drinking normal, normal activity, etc. He generally coughs when getting up or getting excited. When he lays down I can hear a deep breathing as his nasal passage is constricted. Sometimes is sounds like he is playing the clarinet/flute with is nose. All this congestion, I believe, is at the face....and less so at the lungs.

Could this be a crazy food allergy....I was thinking of putting him on a raw diet to see if it helps any? What about an allergy in general? Could this be cancer...how can this be confirmed (or refuted).

I'm going to take him to the local apothecary next weekend for alternative treatment to see if an herbal tincture can can provide relief.

Also, I had a full blood work done at the beginning of 2019 which the vets have had access to.

I got some recommendations from my neighbors on a premier vet in the area. I will be calling them tomorrow to get Ali in ASAP, but any feedback can guide me with the questions I should be asking and the treatment I should be suggesting/requesting.

I appreciate any help that you have

I hope you get better help soon. I know the kennel cough can be hard to get ride of.

I'd be wondering if it's an allergy- could be food, but could be vegetation or something new in the house too. Is there anything you've introduced over the last few months? laundry soap, plants, air fresheners.... that's not to say that like humans, dogs can gain an allergy to something they weren't allergic to before.

I'd ask the vet about trying some benedryl or some antihistimine. The vet can tell you the best to use and the dosage- if they agree.

I wish you luck.

That does sound a lot like kennel cough. I did have a dog with a mold allergy she was playing in some leaves and she got a cough but she also got hives and her eye membranes were red. When I took her to the Emergency clinic they gave her steroids and that cleared most of it up. . I would go to a better Vet if it was allergy steriods should have helped it my Vet says food allergies make up a small amount of allergic reactions in dogs. I am glad you said his heart was normal I would get a better Vet though it sounds like you have not found the right one to do a more thorough exam.
