Cooper is 9 months and started his second set of puppy classes. He does pretty good on the leash overall but when he sees other dogs he barks and lunges. The trainer suggested he use this gentle leader which he hated putting it on. But hasn't gotten used to it a little. We will see tomorrow during our walk. Has anyone used this and how has it worked for you?

The instant a leash goes "tight" you've lost the battle. A better approach is to move on and ignore! No dog to dog intros with I thought my dog was friendly folks!

Any tool improperly used can do harm! GL,s are not exempt from this! If you yank and crank on a dog with a GL you can damage his neck, it's called leverage!

People are free to use what they want, it makes it easy for the rest of us to know which dogs to stay away from!
So the good news to GL people, is that folks like myself that walk our dogs on a loose leash or no leash will gladly give GL folks a very wide berth!
Soooo no dog reactivity issues!

I am not accusing anyone of anything?? I am simply saying "any tool" improperly used can be abused! The leash or "whatever" has to be loose, the dog has to be under threshold. You said the same thing.
If the OP is use to pulling and tugging on the dog and does the same thing with the GL, it "could hurt her dog." I did not say it would and I don't "know" if they do that?
The "theory is redirection,forces compliance, with the GL!" If it's a "soft" dog most likely it'll work just fine. If used as intended with the right owner and the right dog no problem!
But there are consequences to it's improper use. That's what I pointed out and offered an "alternative" approach that did not involve a purchase. Only time and patience!
I also explained one possible reason why anyone that walks there dogs with "tools" will see well behaved dogs "disappear" as they approach??
We cross the street or step aside when we see dogs approach "tools," are not in my case. My dogs will wait calmly by my side and I will say "nice dog" or smile!
Those dogs get there space and my dogs stay safe,it's a win for everybody!
