Last Tuesday I left for work, leaving my 8yr old Boxer @home and had just played with her for about 30minutes (she was fine). When I returned home later that night, she didn't come to the door and was lying in the corner of my room on the floor which is weird because she never does this. I couldn't figure out what was wrong with her, she had zero energy, very very lethargic, droopy eyes, wouldn't eat her food, just acting very weird overall. I later found that her bowl of dog food had some mold on it, that I had just purchased. I took her to the vet, they ran blood work, took urinary test, etc.. and everything came back perfect. However today, 5 days later, she is still acting like this. She's moving around a little more, but she's still not herself, I thought she'd be feeling better by this point. I'm not sure what to do at this point and I'm very worried!! If anyone has experinced this before or has any advice, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,
Worried Boxer Owner

Yes I agree to call the food company as well that's pretty bull right there and if they don't do anything about it then make it public as in call your news station and anything other publicity and make sure people don't buy that kind. What kind was it just to make sure I don't feed my girl that....
Also she might have an upset stomach call your vet and see if you could get some stuff to make her poop out the rest of whatever is left in her if that could be the problem you know?

This needs to be reported to the dogfood company ASAP! Also you need to get your dog back to the vet immediately.

Aflatoxin is a mold by-product that occurs on corn. It’s not terribly pretty, but it’s surprising that it’s so toxic. Here’s what the moldy corn with it looks like.
Corn, anyone? Not this stuff. A toxic by-product of moldy corn is behind too many recent recalls of dry dog food.

Dogs who have eaten aflatoxin-contaminated food can show sluggishness or lethargy, a reluctance to eat, vomiting, a yellowish tint to the eyes or gums, or diarrhea. They should be seen by a veterinarian.

Mold is a mycotoxin. There are many types of mycotoxins. Did they send out the food to be tested? If you haven't had the food tested, but still have the food then you should get it tested. Vet schools have resources for testing foods. One of the best is Cornell University Veterinary School (they may need a recommendation from your vet to test the food), but here is there contact info:
Contact Information

And yes, you should call the manufacturer to report the problem. If you are in the USA you should also file a complaint with the FDA. Here is their website:
Report a Problem

Mycotoxins generally impair liver function. I would have more bloodwork done to re-check her liver. There really is no antidote for mycotoxin poisening. The amount of damage done depends a lot on how much of it she consumed. It may just take more time for her to feel better, but I would have your vet monitor her closely.

Hope she feels better soon :):)

Thanks for the responses, after i posted that. Roxy got up off the floor tried to take a few steps but her legs gave out and she'd fall. So i called an animal hospital an waiting for her now, they are running another blood test and doing ultra sound. And i definately plan on contacting the food manufacturer and the pet atore i bought the food from. Thanks again, this site is great

Poor Roxy. I hope she gets through this OK. Scary when you think what can be in dog food.

Hey guys, I appreciate all the kind words. Unfortunately my day was a nightmare and I got the news I've been dreading to hear for 8years. They ran an ultra-scan and found large tumors, 1 in her kidney and 1 in her lung and blood in her stomach. They gave me the option to do surgery where she would live 3-4 months (maybe) then it would come back and she would suffer, take her home and she would suffer and pass within a few days, or put her down....which really caught me off guard because she was perfectly fine just a few days ago. She passed in my arms tonight, and will be truely missed. I lost my best friend today and she's the only dog I've ever owned so this is really hard. She slept with me every night, waited for me at the back door to get home, went on walks with me everyday, and loved giving kisses on my face. I grew so close to her, and will cherish all the great memories we had together. Give your boxer extra lovin tonight, you truely never know.

RIP Roxy.

I'm so sorry for your loss. The same thing happened to me with my golden retriever this summer. He went into septic shock because he had a tumor that we didn't know was there until it ruptured his intestine. His only symptom was a fever, so I took him to the vet thinking it was no big deal and I had to decide to end his suffering and was totally caught off guard. It was the hardest decision I ever made and I still miss him every day. He was 7 years old. We're all here for you if you need us.

So very sorry to hear that. My heart goes out to you. But knowing you did what was best for Roxy I'm sure must be some comfort. And you are right we never know what tomorrow brings. Hugs from Ingrid and a slobbery kiss from Baron

Oh no! I came to my computer this morning to check on Roxy and so hoped for something much different. You poor thing. I am so very, very sorry for your sudden loss of your beautiful girl. You will be in my thoughts and I hope you take comfort in that your companion knew the meaning of true love and happiness. A big, big hug to you and I will go give my Rocco a big smooch in Roxy's honor right now.
